Plan the stairs:
Before starting the staircase build, it’s important to plan the stairs. This includes understanding the terminology behind building a basic set of stairs, the math to layout, cut, and install your first stringer, and more. You should also consider the size, layout, and materials before you start.
Prepare the foundation:
Clear the area where you plan to build your steps and lay down a base of gravel to stabilise your steps and keep them from shifting.
Build the formwork:
Use 2x4 timber to create the formwork for your stairs. Cut the timber to size and nail it together to create the formwork for each step. Make sure the formwork is level and square.
Place the reinforcement bars:
Place the reinforcement bars in the formwork. The bars should be placed in a grid pattern, with the bars running both horizontally and vertically. The bars should be placed about 2 inches from the bottom of the formwork.
Pour the concrete:
Mix the concrete according to the manufacturer’s instructions and pour it into the formwork. Use a trowel to smooth out the surface of the concrete. Allow the concrete to cure for at least 24 hours.
Remove the formwork:
Once the concrete has cured, remove the formwork. Use a hammer and chisel to remove any excess concrete from the edges of the steps.
Finish the stairs:
Use a concrete sealer to protect the stairs from water damage and staining. You can also add a non-slip additive to the sealer to make the stairs safer to walk on. Don’t hesitate to contact us for a quote to construct your custom staircase.
